Experimental Hedgehog Drug: Can this New Cancer Drug Improve the Conditions of People with Cancer?

The massive researches and studies that was funded by Genentech results in an experimental drug with the code name GDC-0449. This experimental drug has shown drastic improvement on the patient with the advance stage of brain and skin cancer. At this stage, cancers are impossible to treat, but when this new oral drug was taken, it shows improvement on the cancer patient.

Experts do not stop from looking for new cancer drugs that will help patients who feel hopeless especially upon knowing that they have cancer. With the advent of advance studies of possible cure for patients with late stage of cancer, GDC-0449 is welcoming news for all.

This new oral drug is called hedgehog inhibitor. This inhibitor is one of the hottest new anticancer targets. During the embryonic stage and as early as childhood, the molecules which encourage the growth process are called hedgehogs. This is turned off when we reach our adulthood but then, once this is turned off, it stimulates the grown of cancer cells. The new experimental drug, GDC-0449 blocks the molecules that cause cancer.

There are some types of cancer that are totally dependent on these type of molecules is basal cell carcinoma which is the most common type of skin cancer. This can be treated at the early stage of skin cancer by surgery, however, there is no treatment and proves to be fatal when the disease is already malignant. There was a remarkable response of 55% in the overall study wherein 50% of the 18 patient with malignant disease showed remarkable response.

Most patients with medulloblastoma which is a cancer of the part of the brain usually die in less than six months. However, the patient will survive longer when he undergoes extensive surgeries, chemotherapies and radiation therapy. As part of the clinical trial, they gave GDC-0449 when the patient’s cancer had already spread throughout the body. Two months after he was given the GDC-0449, the pain associated with the disease lessened and the patient gained weight. But then in three months time from taking the drug, he became resistant to GDC-0449, it spread throughout the body and after two months, the patient dies.

The remarkable response shows a good future in cancer treatment and if used in combination with other cancer treatments like surgery can give a bright future for cancer patients.

The extensive researches and studies in relation with skin cancer were published in The New England Journal of Medicine online edition and the other study in relation with brain cancer was published on The New England Journal of Medicine. Publishing new treatments on cancer is necessary in getting the cancer research impact factor for at least two years. The higher the impact factor of the journal is important than those with the lower ones.

Sounds too good for cancer patients, there is hope after all.
